FANALYTICS: Projectable chunks

When we evaluate a player's performance, it is typically done on an annual basis. We can compare a 30-HR, .300 season over 550 AB against a 24 HR, .270 season over 550 AB and make reasonable assumptions about how a player is trending.

In truth, we've come to learn that some elements of skill do not stabilize even over a full season and actually require longer time periods to assess. Still, the "year" has always been the traditional benchmark.

But the baseball "year" lasts six months and is a very long time to just sit back and watch. If we were able to do that, we would not have been freaking out when Edwin Encarnación came out of April with only two home runs. We would not have become lemmings, jumping into the free agent pool to grab...
