AL Central: Can anyone overtake Maldonado in Chicago?

Chicago White Sox

The catcher position is one where the White Sox may struggle to get offensive production in 2024. Martín Maldonado (C, CHW) looks like the frontrunner for most starts behind the plate, but he hasn't had a BA above .200 since way back in 2020, and his moderate power isn't worth the average drain.

Max Stassi (C, CHW) was acquired in December and is in the mix for a roster spot, but it remains to be seen what he has to offer. After productive seasons in 2020 and 2021, he fell flat in 2022, hitting .180 in 375 PA before missing all of last season with a hip injury. A 1 for 13 start to the spring doesn't inspire much confidence, but Stassi could still potentially cut into Maldonado's playing time if he starts to hit.
