AL East: Cole looming, targeting June return

New York’s rotation has been a major strength this season (2.72 ERA, 2nd in MLB) despite the team being without its ace, Gerrit Cole, for the entire year due to a nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. Cole completed a live bullpen at Yankee Stadium on May 21 and told reporters afterward that he wouldn’t rule out returning to the Yankees’ rotation by the end of June. On May 25, Cole then threw two 15-pitch innings in a simulated game against Yankees minor leaguers at the complex in Tampa. The expectation is that Cole is likely to face hitters again this week before potentially starting a rehab assignment.
