DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: AL Central—Victor Martinez starts at catcher

Victor Martínez (DH/1B/C, DET) started twice at catcher last week—his first games there since 2011—but it was only because the Tigers were playing in an NL park and wanted his bat in the lineup. Martinez won’t get behind the plate enough to qualify for 2014 catcher eligibility in most leagues.

Jose Veras (RHP, DET) picked up a save last week, but it was due to unique circumstances and not because of any concerns about Joaquín Benoit (RHP, DET). Veras entered the game in the 8th with a three run lead and when the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th manager Jim Leyland simply let Veras finish the game. Veras has pitched well in 13 appearances since being acquired from Houston compiling a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3...
