Contrary to those observers who suggested that  Mark Appel could make a September debut in HOU, GM Jeff Luhnow has confirmed that the Astros' #1 pick will be shut down for the season. Which is just as well for manager Bo Porter, given what he's currently getting from rotation additions is keeping a six-man rotation intact longer than originally anticipated.

Newcomers Jarred Cosart (RHP, HOU), Brad Peacock (RHP, HOU) and Brett Oberholtzer (LHP, HOU) have collectively recorded an astonishing 1.50 ERA in 84 IP of work since joining the rotation in the 2H.
