American children of the 1970s rarely feel more seen than when someone brings up The Great Space Coaster, a truly madcap kids’ show featuring a mix of humans, puppets, and animated shorts that in retrospect could easily pass for a contemporary techno-libertarian fever dream about colonizing asteroids. One of the recurring sketches involved a puppet gnu—or wildebeest—newscaster named Gary Gnu. His whole shtick was adding an over-enunciated “g” sound to every word beginning with the letter “n,” modeling the pronunciation of his own animal species. Those were simpler times.
