For the third time in three years, John Axford (RHP, CLE) has been pulled from his closer job. In 2012 with the Brewers, Axford regained the job, but last year he lost the job and was traded to the Cardinals. Manager Terry Francona has said the move is temporary. He announced a closer-by-committee involving Cody Allen (RHP, CLE), Scott Atchison (RHP, CLE), Marc Rzepczynski (LHP, CLE), and Bryan Shaw (RHP, CLE). History suggests that closer-by-committee situations don’t last and one pitcher will soon get most of the save opportunities.

Most observers have suggested that Allen was next in line behind Axford, but Brian Shaw picked up two saves last week. The second save was after the Axford announcement had been made, and...
