Manager Robin Ventura's 2016 spring training message to his players reportedly had a different tone than years past, with a focus on defensive fundamentals and offensive pressure with speed. The Pale Hose finished 24th in MLB in fielding percentage and 24th in SBs in 2015. Offseason free agency helped with the D but not so much with the quickness.

J.B. Shuck (OF, CHW) rebounded from an awful 2014 (.145 BA, .216 xBA) to record a .266 BA (.273 xBA) in 2015. He was limited to 143 AB due to a hamstring injury and CHW's late-season audition of Trayce Thompson (OF, LA), but a December 2015 trade of Thompson to LA makes Shuck's path to the 4th OF slot clearer.
