Throughout spring training new manager Brad Ausmus encouraged aggressive base running. The Tigers will steal significantly more bases than they did last year, when they stole 35 bases in 55 attempts to finish last in the majors. Rajai Davis (OF, DET) alone is projected to steal 46. Evidence from spring training suggests that Ausmus will have the Tigers running much more. This year the Tigers had 33 SB in spring training, compared to 17 in 2013. Limiting the snapshot to players who were on the roster both springs shows those players stole 17 bases this year compared to 11 last spring.

Other beneficiaries of Ausmus’ base running philosophy should be Ian Kinsler (2B, DET) and Austin Jackson (OF, DET) who should both exceed...
