The Orioles’ decision to designate Dwight Smith (OF, BAL) for assignment — he passed through waivers and remains with the organization at its alternate training site — may on some level be a vote of confidence for Cedric Mullins (OF, BAL).

Mullins has been a lineup fixture in center field since Austin Hays (OF, BAL) landed on the injured list with a fractured rib and an uncertain return date. 

On the surface, it seems like Mullins may be seizing the opportunity, but the main difference between this season’s success and last season’s debacle is a dramatic reversal in Mullins’ hit rate.
