As the Orioles continue to be surprisingly competitive in the playoff chase — as of this writing, they were tied with the Rays for the third and final AL wild card — thoughts have begun to turn to whether a fresh, young arm might be able to provide the boost that propels them to the postseason.

For a while, such speculation centered on DL Hall (LHP, BAL), who as recently as July 22 had been named International League Pitcher of the Week, after a pair of starts in which he allowed one unearned run over 10.2 IP (18/5 K/BB) for AAA-Norfolk.

But Hall’s performance took a sharp turn for the worse immediately thereafter, as he could not escape the first inning in his July 26 start (0.2 IP, 6 ER, 6 H, 2 HR, 0 BB, 1 K), and he...
