PT TOMORROW: AL East — Eye of the Strahm: Keep bids in check on BOS reliever

Boston Red Sox

With the caveat that this could turn out to be bad advice — the only thing certain with the Boston bullpen has been the uncertainty — moderation would seem to be in order when it comes to what is shaping up to be a bidding frenzy for the services of Matt Strahm (LHP, BOS), after the left-hander collected saves on back-to-back nights this past week.

A closer look suggests those saves are more the product of happenstance than a formal anointing. Strahm’s first save, on June 7, came in extra innings in a game that was tied from the seventh inning on. That is a circumstance in which “the closer” is often used to extend the game rather than held back for a save chance that never comes.
