One of the more perplexing positions in the AL East in 2017 has been third base for the Red Sox, where eight players have logged time at the hot corner, including a catcher who last played the position in rookie ball (Christian Vázquez (C, BOS)), and an outfielder who never played the position in organized baseball (Steve Selsky, OF, BOS). With four BOS third basemen currently on the DL, a top “To Do” list item could be to establish continuity at 3B for the second half. One of the ways to do this could be to promote top prospect Rafael Devers (3B, BOS, pictured above) directly from AA-Portland to the majors, similar to the path taken by Andrew Benintendi (OF, BOS) in 2016.
