PT TOMORROW: AL East—Ankle injury may again ground Bird

With Greg Bird (1B, NYY) set to see a foot specialist today, the Yankees first base plans for 2018 are suddenly very much in flux.

Bird had surgery last July to remove an excess bone growth in his right ankle, and the current injury is reportedly in a similar area.
While the flare-up of the injury has been reported as if it were a recent development, Bird’s performance this spring (8-for-52, 16 K) suggests it may have been bothering him for a bit longer.

Given that Tyler Austin (1B, NYY) has been optioned to the minors, Neil Walker (2B, NYY) may well inherit the bulk of the starts at first base, if Bird has to miss time. That, in turn, would open up more or less regular playing time at second base for Tyler Wade (2B,...
