The inclusion of Matt Duffy (3B, TAM) in the Matt Moore (LHP, SF) trade, curious at first blush, was clarified when it was reported that the Rays intend to make Duffy their new starting shortstop upon his return from an Achilles injury, something on track to happen as soon as the end of this week.

Lame-duck shortstop Brad Miller (SS, TAM) has said he is “extremely disappointed” by the news, given that he considers himself a shortstop. But the statistics, which place Miller 25th in fielding percentage and 26th in range factor, suggest that the move should not have been a total surprise.

Tampa has made clear, however, that it values Miller’s bat in the lineup. First base is apparently Miller’s main destination once Duffy is...
