The pitching staff entered Tuesday play with a 6.18 2H ERA, and offering no signs that the carnage will let up in September. The rotation has been sub-par all season (4.88 ERA YTD), but the post-Sonny Gray rotation has been disastrous, with none of the starters stepping up in his absence. Sean Manaea, Kendall Graveman, Jharel Cotton and even Daniel Gossett have all shown brief flashes and have MLB futures to varying degrees. But none have a sub-5 2H ERA as of Tuesday, and none have an ERA below 4.5 for the season. 36-year-old Chris Smith is the current #5 starter, but his 7.11/6.04 ERA/xERA and 33 runs allowed over his last 27 IP stamp him as a placeholder who could be replaced at any minute.
