Suddenly at the worst possible time, the Rangers have a ninth-inning problem with some fantasy ramifications. With an ERA a run lower than his xERA for most of 2023, closer Will Smith (LHP, TEX) had been due for regression, and it's finally arrived, as Smith has been scored upon five times over his last seven outings (since Aug. 5) and blown two saves. Smith's numbers during this stretch—5.1 IP, 3/3 K/BB, 9 earned runs, 2 HR allowed—have come with wavering velocity and location that suggest he could use at least a breather or some help.
