The club began crowd-sourcing its pitching staff back in July before the trade deadline, with the acquisitions of Homer Bailey (RHP, OAK), Tanner Roark (RHP, OAK) and reliever Jake Diekman. We first noted it then, but now in August the effort is in overdrive with the signing of Matt Harvey (RHP, OAK) to a minor league contract and the call-up of A.J. Puk (LHP, OAK)—likely to be followed by the additions of injury rehabbers Sean Manaea (LHP, OAK) and Jesús Luzardo (LHP, OAK) within the next 10-14 days. Clearly the A's plan on using MLB's final season of 40-man September rosters—the limit becomes 28 in 2020—both for a mix-and-match wild-card run and to audition for post-season roles.
