The surprising demotion of Aledmys Díaz (SS, STL) on June 28 has created opportunity for players not expected to see significant major league time this season. Phil Hertz covered the short-term implications at shortstop in PT Today. Paul DeJong (2B/SS, STL), called up to fill-in for the injured Kolten Wong (2B, STL) earlier in June, saw the first three starts at shortstop following Diaz’s demotion. The club is hoping Diaz can right himself with a stint in the minors and has not put a timetable on his return. Randal Grichuk (OF, STL) was away from the club nearly a month before St. Louis recalled him to their active roster.
