New additions Sonny Gray (RHP, CIN) and Alex Wood (RHP, CIN) got most of the attention in Cincinnati as major offseason additions. However, young incumbents in the rotation made a splash this week, displaying success with changes to their pitch mix.

Anthony DeSclafani (RHP, CIN) led things off with his season debut on Tuesday, April 2 against Milwaukee, striking out eight Brewers in five innings thanks in large part to the strength of his curveball. He used the pitch 14 times in that game, more than any start he made in 2018 both in terms of volume and rate. It was also very effective, generating six whiffs and no hits.
