Sonny Gray (CIN, RHP) is suffering from elbow stiffness early this spring, serving as a not-so-gentle reminder that starting pitchers are fragile. While the injury appears to be nothing serious, it’s nearly inevitable the Reds will have to look beyond their current starting rotation to get through all 162 games this season.

The Reds were aggressive in adding starters this winter, and pushed promising young pitchers out of the rotation as a result. Cody Reed (LHP, CIN) pitched both out of the bullpen and as a starter in 2018, but found more success in his role as a starter. In 31.1 innings, he mustered a strong 2.7 Cmd. While he still struggled with a 3.5 Ctl, it was a notable step forward from his career mark of 4.4....
