PT TOMORROW: NL East—Has Straily nailed down the 5th SP job in MIA?

We discussed the fifth starter vacancy back in late January, so now is a good time to update the situation. The chief competitors were slated to be Dan Straily (RHP, MIA), Jeff Locke (LHP, MIA), José Ureña (RHP, MIA), and Justin Nicolino (LHP, MIA). Manager Don Mattingly hasn’t yet named a winner in the battle, but Straily remains the heavy favorite.

Locke seemed a longshot to make the rotation, and now it has been announced that he will open the season on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis. He’ll likely pitch out of the bullpen once he’s healthy.

Urena, 25, is out of minor league options, so he looks like a lock to make the roster in some capacity. Barring injury to one of the team’s starters, he’ll most...
