When the Mets had Peter Alonso (1B, NYM) and Dominic Smith (1B/OF, NYM) vie for the first base job in spring training, they were no doubt hoping the competition would bring out the best in each. The result was way better than the team could’ve anticipated, creating a first-world problem over which talented, pedigreed young player to take north. It was only a problem in that both players were strictly 1B; the brass was adamant about not playing Smith in LF, and under no circumstances were they inclined to move Alonso, who already carried a reputation as a choppy defender at first. GM Brodie Van Wagenen decided to roster both players, and the brilliant spring results have carried over into the regular season for both players....
