Thomas Szapucki (LHP, NYM, pictured above) has come up as a possible solution to the Mets’ starting pitching crunch. Although the worst of it has passed (for now) with Jacob deGrom (RHP, NYM) and Taijuan Walker (RHP, NYM) both back from the IL, the team is likely to be without Carlos Carrasco (RHP, NYM) for another month, and Noah Syndergaard (RHP, NYM) was shut down for six weeks after coming down with inflammation in his surgically-repaired right elbow. Szapucki is performing well enough at Triple-A (2.12 ERA, 23.3% K%), but his skills haven’t been so sharp (10.3% K-BB%, 4.85 xFIP).
