We could all use a feel-good story right about now—especially Nationals fans, who’ve been sucking exhaust from the tail pipe of the National League East pretty much since the beginning of this miserable shortened season. Sure, the team’s storybook turnaround in 2019 added a good deal of drama and satisfaction en route to their first World Series title, but at 17-28, this year’s Nats have an even worse record than last year’s heroes through 45 games (they were 19-26). The problem, of course, is that unlike last year, Davey Martinez and crew don’t have the luxury of another 117 games of runway to take off.
