There was an expectation—held by many—that the Mets, now under the nurturing (read: rich) stewardship of Steve Cohen, would make a big splash at the trade deadline. Marquee names were bandied about; no player was seemingly out of reach. Then, reports began to circulate that the team’s management was unwilling to part with any significant prospects in exchange for rentals. The deadline passed, and the Mets were content with adding a few role players but no bona fide stars. Setting aside their perplexing decision not to import a gas-throwing lefty for the bullpen, the offensive additions have proven themselves quite valuable.
