As we wrote last September, the Phillies closer job will be up for grabs this spring. Jeanmar Gómez (RHP, PHI) notched 37 saves in 2016 despite posting a lousy 4.85 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 63 BPV in 69 IP, but lost his grip on the role during the season’s final days. Meanwhile, Hector Neris (RHP, PHI) and Edubray Ramos (RHP, PHI) displayed vastly superior skills. The team also signed veteran late-inning reliever Joaquín Benoit (RHP, PHI) to a one-year, $7.5 million contract in early December.

Neris had an impressive 2.58 ERA, 11.4 Dom and 135 BPV in 80 IP a year ago. However, be mindful of the Ctl downside that his 52% FpK% signifies. If the 28-year-old can continue to keep the free passes at a reasonable level, he...
