Despite the frequency at which the Padres have made big splash additions to their roster over the last few seasons, they have allocated very few resources to catcher. It’s been an ongoing problem as a result, and that problem has seemingly reached its peak early this season. Luis Campusano (C, SD) was perhaps finally in a position to get more consistent at-bats in 2023, though he has been sidelined since mid-April with a thumb sprain and is unlikely to return until July. Austin Nola (C, SD) has had a dreadful season (-40 BPV) that has left his productive 2020 and 2021 campaigns as distant memories. Elsewhere, Brett Sullivan (C, SD) isn’t a true solution in any scenario and was optioned to AAA-El Paso on Tuesday.
