Despite what was ultimately a disappointing year, the Giants' bullpen gave fans some reason for optimism, finishing with a 3.79 ERA (11th in MLB) and witnessing the successful return of Will Smith (LHP, SF) from 2017 Tommy John surgery. In his 53 IP, Smith posted a 2.55 ERA (2.99 xERA) with a 12.1 Dom (15% SwK) and 2.5 Ctl (62% FpK)—all while amassing 13 saves in the second half. The 29-year-old’s skill set is such that, if handed the role, he could emerge as one of the top closers in the game.

Smith’s name, however, has been mentioned in trade rumors, and the re-tooling Giants could of course look to move him at the right price. Not only that, manager Bruce Bochy has already said that it’s “too early” to name the...
