At the back of the bullpen currently sits Brandon Maurer (RHP, SD), whose 2.90 ERA in the 2H contrasts sharply with his 4.27 xERA over that same timeframe. At 26 years of age, Maurer has good velocity (95 mph) and SwK (12%), and did lock down 13 of his 15 save chances after seizing the closer’s role in early July. A big step forward in 2H Ctl (to 1.5, down from 4.2) bodes well, but his ability to keep the gig may hinge on whether he can bring his GB (38%) back in line with his 2015 numbers (48%). Another factor may very well be Maurer’s ability to keep Carter Capps (RHP, SD) at bay, who is said to be making quick recovery from Tommy John surgery and hopes to be ready for Opening Day.
