Torn anterior cruciate ligament  (ACL)
It wasn’t that long ago if a player suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (aka ACL) not only was his season over but his career was in jeopardy. At one time, a torn ACL, though rare, was a career-ender no matter the sport. The first high profile athlete who overcame a torn ACL was Danny Manning of the Kansas Jayhawks and NBA in late 1980s. He suffered a torn ACL in his rookie season of 1988, but was able to return to action though he lost some of the athleticism that made him such a special player. He is now known as the first NBA player to return to action after undergoing ACL surgery on both knees.
