Last season, Morton became the Bucs staff ace as he started a career high 29 games and worked 171.2 innings. He won’t get close to those numbers this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament yesterday. He’s expected back around the all-star break next season.

Because he was past the age-26 barrier (where a lot of baseball types believe pitchers are most vulnerable to elbow injuries), it looked like he was going avoid the dreaded elbow injury. He did, however, suffer a torn labrum in his left hip that required surgery last October. The Pirates believed he would start the year on the DL and return sometime in May. He...
