Fantasy baseball drafters are optimists by nature. Each spring—or winter, depending when you start—we research the player pool for any nugget of “insight,” create our draft lists, and then choose our rosters, all with a hope that these individual players will perform better than what we “paid” to acquire them (draft slot or auction dollars). “Gonna work out this year,” we tell ourselves.

As you read this article, do so with the above “optimist” slant. BaseballHQ founder Ron Shandler used to refer to an exercise as this as “wiping the slate clean”—in short, remembering that 2026 is a new year of new possiblities. To excel in this game, we need to open up our minds to what could happen in the 27 weeks of the 2026...
