SPECULATOR: Spring training "news" or "noise"

Spring training is all about optimism. Every team is 0-0. Every player is in "the best shape of their life." All of the minor injuries that plagued the prior year have had all winter to heal. Any pitcher could on the verge of perfecting the new pitch that vaults them into the elite class. Managers talk about being more aggressive, or breaking the shackles of traditional roster construction.

The best part of all of the above is that the MLB personnel are just so optimistic, they just can't help but share that optimism with us. Of course, we have studied this, and found out that, in the aggregate, it's all bunk. Still, with nothing else to look at in March than meaningless results and the even more meaningless analysis of those results,...
