The traditional approach of analyzing only a pitcher's aggregate skills is incomplete when it comes to starting pitchers. After all, a pitcher owns his skill flashes just as much as he owns his aggregate skills. The skill flashes just come in smaller sample sizes.

As you prepare for the upcoming season, you can gain an advantage even in skill-savvy leagues by speculating on skill flashes. There is risk with doing this, since smaller sample sizes result in less data reliability. But this approach also allows you to speculate on breakouts before they happen and on end-game targets before they get on anyone else's radar.
