Let's continue our one-split-away series by looking at the skills of starting pitchers in two scenarios: with the bases empty and with runners on base.

In 2013, we set some three-year skill baselines for these two scenarios. Our findings confirmed the reason that we have discussed this split in this space for many years: there are drastic skill splits when pitchers throw with the bases empty vs. with runners on base.
