If you play in a deep league, odds are that you need to look beneath the surface to find starting pitchers worthy of a waiver wire pickup, since most available free agents won't seem attractive at first glance.
That could mean looking at long relievers with strong skills in a team's bullpen and speculating on who might get a shot at a starting role.
Or it could involve looking at an indicator like swinging strike rate—one that is not yet getting as much attention as it will in the future.
