STARTERS: Mid-season PQS targets, 2015

The Pure Quality Start (PQS) measurement is a tool to analyze the aggregate skills posted by starting pitchers on a game-by-game basis. It differs from the traditional Quality Start method because it focuses on a SP's skills instead of surface stats liked earned runs.

PQS scores range from a scale from 0 to 5 based on the following criteria:

  • 1 point for logging 6 or more innings
  • 1 point for allowing the same or fewer number of hits than IP
  • 1 point for allowing 1 or no home runs
  • 1 point for having at least (IP-2) strikeouts
  • 1 point for having twice as many strikeouts as walks

Those that measure a PQS-4/5 are dominant (DOM) starts, whereas outings that rate as a PQS-0/1 are disastrous (DIS) starts.
