STL rotation shifts as Carpenter makes first 2012 start

Chris Carpenter (RHP, STL) registered a PQS-3 in his 2012 debut Friday, allowing five hits and two ER with 2K/1 BB in five innings. He had been plagued since spring training by nerve issues in his neck and shoulder which eventually required mid-season thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.

Carpenter replaced rookie Joe Kelly (RHP, STL) in the rotation. Kelly has made 16 starts among 19 appearances since his June call-up. His 44%/6% PQS-DOM/DIS mark shows his knack for avoiding disastrous outings, while his pedestrian 58 BPV and 4.09 xERA stamp Kelly as a worthy back-of-rotation starter.
