(*) PT TODAY: Mets OF Ruggiano returns from bad hammy

Team-by-team playing time allocation charts can be found in our Teamview pages.

National League | American League

Mets | Justin Ruggiano activated from DL
New York Mets OF Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday, August 18.  Source: MLBRosterMoves

BHQ take: Ruggiano was not only activated, he also was in center field for the Mets on Aug. 18. As we noted in a note on July 31 when the Mets called up Ruggiano, his biggest asset is some decent power: a career PX of 120. To make room for Ruggiano, the Mets sent Gabriel Ynoa to Las Vegas. He likely will be back when rosters expand.  —Phil Hertz

Impact: High
Ruggiano, Justin PT Gain: 5%
Ynoa, Gabriel    PT Loss: -3%

Nationals | Brian Goodwin optioned
Washington Nationals OF Brian Goodwin was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse Thursday, Aug. 18.  Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: Goodwin's demotion was immediately due to Washington's need to bolster the bullpen after three straight games in which the Nationals' starter did not make it past the fourth inning. He likely was headed to the minors soon in any event because Ryan Zimmerman is close to being activated off the DL. For the present, Washington has recalled A.J. Cole, who had a brief sojourn with Washington in 2015, but has spent all of 2016 with Syracuse. According to BaseballHQ.com, he was Washington's No. 7 prospect coming into 2016 with a 7A rating. He is covered in the Daily Call-Ups column. As for Zimmerman, 2016 is threatening to be a lost season for the first baseman. Thanks to multiple DL stints, he's only managed 302 at-bats so far. Perhaps of greater concern is what he's done with those at-bats: .248 xBA and 105 PX.  —Phil Hertz

Impact: High
Cole, A.J.    PT Gain: 1%
Goodwin, Brian PT Loss: -5%
Zimmerman, Ryan W PT Gain: 20%

Reds | Adam Duvall doing better
Cincinnati Reds OF Adam Duvall (foot) is no longer wearing a boot on his injured left foot. He will take batting practice Thursday, Aug. 18.  Source: MLB.com - Mark Sheldon

BHQ take: Duvall's absence for the past three games has meant extra PT for reserve outfielder Tyler Holt. Holt got his fourth straight OF start Aug. 18. Holt has good speed, though he does not reach base consistently enough to use it. Holt has been used sparingly, with only 139 AB, despite spending the entire season with CIN. He lacks power and has subpar contact skill, so the production drop-off from Duvall to Holt is considerable.   —Tom Kephart

Impact: Med
Holt, Tyler PT Gain: 5%
Duvall, Adam PT Loss: -5%

Tigers | Alex Presley recalled
Detroit Tigers OF Alex Presley was recalled from Class AAA Toledo Thursday, Aug. 18.  Source: MLive.com - Evan Woodbery

BHQ take: Recently promoted Steven Moyà was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Presley. With Tyler Collins nursing a minor injury, Presley provides an additional outfielder capable of playing CF. Presley had an early season trial with MIL, batting .198 in 116 AB, with three HR. His 54 PX and .232 xBA suggest avoidance. He has proven to be a marginal MLB player, unable to consistently stick at the MLB level.   —Tom Kephart

Impact: Low
Moya, Steven PT Loss: -10%
Collins, Tyler PT Loss: -5%
Presley, Alex PT Gain: 15%

White Sox | Carson Fulmer farmed out
The Chicago White Sox optioned RP Carson Fulmer to Class AAA Charlotte Wednesday, Aug. 17.  Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: Fulmer has been sent to Charlotte (AAA) to be stretched out as a starter. Despite an 8.49 ERA in eight relief appearances, Fulmer likely will be recalled to join Chicago’s starting rotation when rosters expand in September. Selected by the White Sox in the first round of the 2015 draft, Fulmer posted a 1.96 ERA through two levels of the minors in 2015 before being promoted to Birmingham (AA) in 2016, where he proceeded to strike out 90 batters in 17 starts. The 22-year-old righty then made his MLB debut on July 17, skipping Triple-A entirely. Though likely to experience some growing pains, Fulmer could be an intriguing option in both dynasty leagues and redraft leagues, given his dominance rate of 7.7 K/9 and his ground ball rate of 44% in Chicago in 2016. Yet, Fulmer’s low strand rate (47% S%) points to an artificially high ERA in 2016. With improved effectiveness after his first taste of the big leagues, Fulmer’s 8.49 ERA is likely to improve significantly as his strand rate (S%) moves closer to the expected 69-74% range. In a corresponding move, Chicago recalled Anthony Ranaudo to make a spot start or two while Miguel González recovers from a strained right groin.   —Alex Beckey

Impact: Med
Ranaudo, Anthony    PT Gain: 1%
Fulmer, Carson    PT Loss: -1%
