NEWS:  The Dodgers signed free agent DH Shohei Ohtani to a reported 10-year, $700 million contract.

IMPACT: High

BHQ SPIN: Ohtani, the reigning AL MVP, had surgery on his right elbow in September and will serve as a DH only for the 2024 season.  After a career best offensive season (.304/.412/.654 with 44 HR in 594 PA) in 2023, Ohtani will benefit from being surrounded by IF/OF Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, and C Will Smith in a strong Dodgers lineup. With Ohtani expected to serve as the Dodgers DH, Smith, who has appeared in 39 games as a DH over the last two seasons, will likely see reduced ABs as a result of fewer opportunities to DH.
