We consider it one of baseball’s truisms that opposite-side batters have big advantages over same-side batters against right- and left-handed pitchers. That is, we “know” that against left-handed pitchers (LHP), right-handed hitters (RHH) fare significantly better than left-handed hitters (LHH), and that against right-handed pitchers (RHP), the reverse is true.
But it’s lazy and sub-optimal to plan our rosters based on truisms. Over time, sabermetrics and other baseball research have debunked many of the things we thought we knew about the game.
So in this edition of BaseballHQ.com’s Research & Analysis, we’re going to take a look at batter performance by “handedness,” both overall and against pitchers of either hand.
