RESEARCH: Busting the prospect myth

As the 2012 fantasy season wound down, BaseballHQ.com founder and publisher Ron Shandler issued a provocative idea in his Master Notes e-newsletter and BaseballHQ Radio podcast commentary.

Shandler was discussing ultra leagues and other formats in which prospects may be drafted and held on what amount to farm teams for their parent fantasy squads. He further noted that many owners value such prospects very highly—in fact, much more highly than those players deserve.

Shandler also said many owners (and, he noted, MLB teams as well) often eschew a chance to win a pennant because they refuse to part with a “can’t-miss” prospect who might be demanded in exchange for the proven bat or arm who could carry his team to the title.
