RESEARCH: Busting the prospect myth, part 2

Last week, our Research column examined how prospects fare as they enter MLB relative to fanalytic production. We found that many prospects don’t make it at all, only about a third make it in their first year, and the lion’s share of them fail to return a profit in their first season, a value number that declines the longer it takes for them to reach The Show.

But since we realize that many owners play in ultra-style leagues where they “control” their farm prospects for the first three years of their MLB careers, we thought we would see if prospects fare any better by creating value over that longer period.

Again assuming the typical $5 retention cost, we can check if players come into their own with greater experience, and...
