RESEARCH: Exit Strandman

In a career that has spanned just three full major league seasons, Jeremy Hellickson (RHP, TAM) has been an extreme and polarizing pitcher. “Extreme” in what he has accomplished, and “polarizing” in the emotions his extremes stir when fantasy owners talk about him.

Hellickson was lucky in 2011, ringing up a 2.95 ERA/1.15 WHIP despite a 5.6 Dom and 1.6 Cmd, thanks to a 79% strand rate and 23% hit rate. More of the same in 2012, with a 3.10/1.25 greatly aided by a 82% strand and 27% hit rate.

Naturally, when his results got terrible last season (5.17/1.35), despite a sizable improvement in skills, the pat explanation was “regression,” meaning a huge switch from good luck to horrendous luck.
