RESEARCH: More Pitch Velocity vs Outcomes

In the last edition of BaseballHQ Research & Analysis, we determined that fastball velocity is only weakly connected to Dominance (Dom, K/9) and even more weakly to ERA.

In the conclusion of that study, we noted that location of pitches will be as much or more important than velocity alone. So in this edition, we look at various measures of pitch accuracy as well as some swing-and-miss data, and correlate them with ERA and Dom.

We also combined fastball velocity with those various second metrics to see if we could improve the correlative connection to ERA and Dom.

We again compiled PITCHfx pitch-velocity data, strike data, and count data  for the 2013 season from various online sources, and compiled it into a database of 571...
