RESEARCH: Next-start PQS Scores

In the last edition of BaseballHQ.com Research & Analysis, we looked at how pitch counts affected subsequent PQS scores, and found that a high pitch count in a game was a pretty decent predictor of an above-average PQS score in the next.

This led us to wonder how well the PQS score itself in that first game predicted the PQS score in the second. PQS is “Pure Quality Start,” in which a starting pitcher gets:

  • 1 point for going 6 or more innings (fewer than 5 IP earns on automatic PQS-0 score)
  • 1 point for allowing fewer hits than IP
  • 1 point for allowing one or no HR
  • 1 point for having at least (IP-1) strikeouts
  • And 1 point for having twice as many strikeouts as walks

A PQS-0 or -1 is considered a PQS-Disaster start...
