RESEARCH: Salary & production—when do teams cut their losses?

Chris Davis’s 2018 production has been miserable. Currently, his slash line is .170/.253/.274 for an OPS of .529, which is the fifth-lowest of any qualified hitter. In all fairness, Davis should be riding the pine or be released. There's just one small problem: the 32-year-old was signed through the 2022 season for $23M per year for a total of $115M, including this season. No general manager has the intestinal fortitude to convince their owner to release the player even though the team would improve. However, a point does exist when a team either sits, demotes, or releases these overpriced has-beens.
