RESEARCH: Seasonality Trends in Hitting and Pitching Stats

We all "know" that hitters do better in warm weather and pitchers do better in cold weather.  But is this really true?  Can it be demonstrated by examining how stats vary over the course of a season? And if it is true, what are the implications for managing our fantasy rosters?

To assess these questions, we examined monthly trends in BA, SB/Game, HR/Game, RBI/Game, ERA, WHIP, S/Game, and K/9 in the last five full MLB seasons (2007-2011).

The hitting stats showed two interesting trends:

  • First, BA tends to rise month by month until falling in Sep/Oct (HR/Game and RBI/Game, unsurprisingly, follow similar trends).
  • But SB/Game shows a significant decline in July and August before recovering in Sep/Oct.
