With the 2013 MLB first-year player draft just around the corner (June 6-8) we take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of this year’s draft class. Overall, the 2013 draft is of similar quality to 2012, but pales in comparison to the historically deep 2011. The strength of last year’s draft turned out to be high school position players (Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, Albert Almora, Addison Russell, and David Dahl) and college right-handers (Kevin Gausman and Michael Wacha) and that is likely to be the case again in 2013.
The inability of the Pirates to convince Mark Appel (RHP, Stanford) and his agent Scott Boras to reach a deal worth less than $4 million adds the rare elite level college senior into the mix. The decision to go back to...
